Michael McCurry, Fine Art Photographer

I endeavor to perceive and to reveal the essence, the magic and the mystery of my subjects.

My images are invitations to discover treasure beneath the surface. In each composition I explore shape and tone to reveal the essence -- the spirit within the subject. Exploration is a dominant thread in my life. This has inspired my desert vision quests, study of anthropolgy, philosophy, metaphysics and shamanic practice.

The seeds of my connection to the earth were planted in my youth as I discovered remote areas of the high desert with my father. Later photographing isolated areas of Nevada's Great Basin, I found a deep spiritual connection with the landscape. My feelings began to merge with my photography resulting in a series of images I called "Enchanted Places." These were the subject of one-man shows in Reno, Nevada and Great Basin National Park.

Now, living in the Southwest, I am drawn to the spirit of other subjects as well, including the exotic botanical life and the distinctive architecture. I work with light to reveal the exquisite shapes and texture of agaves and cactus and the enchantment of southwestern structures.

I print many photographs on canvas. Those that I hand-color are selected from black and white images and colored, using pigment powders and pastels. The process of hand coloring allows me to re visit the nature of my subject and render a one-of-a-kind image.
